オンライン英会話頻出表現

今日はセブ島最大のお祭りだそうでラングリッチは休校。というわけで、オンライン英会話のレッスンでよく使う表現、よく言われる表現をまとめてみることにする。

I'd like to share useful phrases which I often use and hear in online English lessons like Langrich.

1.before the lesson
T:teacher
 Hi! Good morning! / Good afternoon! / Good evening!
 Welcome to Langrich. This is teacher xx, your teacher for today.
 What do you want to study today? / Please choose the lesson you wanted to study.

S:student
 Hi! Good morning! / Good afternoon! / Good evening!
 I'd like to study the pronunciation textbook review9.
 / I want to study TED 2. Jay Walker on the world's English mania.
 / Could you correct my essay?
 See you soon.

T:
 Okay! I`ll call you in a few minutes. / I`ll call you in a while.

2.introduction
 T/S: Hi! Good morning! / Good afternoon! / Good evening!

 T:What is your name?
 S: -My name is... you can call me by my first name.
  / I am ... and my nickname is.....So you can call me by my nickname...

 T:What can(/should) I call you?
 S: -Please call me... / As you like.

 T:How are you doing today? /How was your weekend?
 S: -I'm fine(/good), thank you. / I'm great.
   /A little okay. / A little better than yesterday. / Not bad.
   / I don't feel well today. I have a fever. / I am not fine. I am very tired.
   / I've been very busy these past few days so I'm a little tired.
   How about you?
*"So-so"は日本人や韓国人がよく使うが、どういう意味?と思われるので使わない方がいい。どっちでもないときはNot bad.の方がいい。

 T:It's been a long time. How have you been doing?
 S: -Yea. It's been quite a while.

 T/S:
 Can you hear (and see) me well/clearly?
 Yes, I can perfectly hear you.
 No, I can't hear you very well.
 Do you think you can increase the volume of your microphone?
 Okay, I will speak louder.

 T:I believe this is our first time to have a class together.
  So let's get to know each other first. / Can you give me a short introduction of yourself?
  / Would you mind introducing yourself before the lesson?
  How long have you been studying here in Langrich?

 T:Why you study English? / Is there anything that you would like to improve more your English skill?
 S: -Because I have to use it in my work. So I want to improve my English, especially speaking skill and grammar.
  / Because I'd like to communicate with foreign people.
  / Because I want to get the IELTS score 6.5.
  / I want to speak English fluently and spontaneously. Could you correct my English, when I make mistakes?

 T/S:Thank you very much for sharing.

3.lesson
 T:Shall we start with our lesson?
 S: -Sure. / Yes, I am ready.

 T:You mention you want to study VOA news, is that correct?
 T:Have you read this article before?
 S: -I already studied this article with another teacher. I would like to continue and start at paragraph (number).
  / I read this article by myself only.

 T:Based on the title, what do you think the article is all about?
 S: -I haven't read the article yet. So I can't give my views yet for this article. I'm sorry.
  / I only read a few lines from this article but I haven't read them thoroughly, so I really can't give you my thoughts about this one. I'm sorry.

 T:How many paragraphs do you want to read first?
 S: - I want to read three paragraphs first.
  / I wanted to read one paragraph each and then please make some necessary correction on my pronunciation

 T:Can you tell me what you understand from the three paragraphs?
       **Teachers want to know your opinion or view, not summary.
 S: -This article is trying to tell us ...... / What this article is trying to say, is that ......
   / These paragraphs are talking about ......

 T:Can you give me the summary of the three paragraphs?
 S: -Okay, .... *answer directly. "the summary is ..."などは不要。

 T:
 I want you to read this article/tongue twister/words.
 Can you (please) read the words(/title /article)? / Let's read the words.
 Let us try some sentences/words.
 Please repeat after me.
 Okay. One more time?
 Let us check.
 So, let us proceed. / Let's continue. / Let's now go to the last part.

  T:Can you use the word "xx" in a sentence?
   / Please choose 3 words and use them in your own sentences.
  S: -Okay, please give me a second. Let me think of a sentence.

4.questions
T:
 Do you have any (other) questions or clarification?

S:
 Yes, I do. I have some questions.
 I don't understand the part of.. / I don't know the word "xx".
 What's the meaning of the word? / What does it mean?
  / Can you please tell me what is the meaning of that word?
  / Can you please give me a word that has the same in meaning and more commonly used than this word?
  Is it same as "xx"?
  Could you give me an example?
  What is the difference between A and B?
  Which phrase(/word) is more natural(/common), A or B?

 Could you type it in your chat box?
 Oh, I see. / I got it.

 None, (teacher's name).
 No, I don't. That was enough.
 No further questions. / I don't have any.
 Not anymore, everything is fine.


 T: Are there words that you find difficult to understand?
 S: -Yes, a few.
  / Nothing. All the words are clear to me.

 S:

 / I couldn't catch the first(/last) part of the question.
*casual talk or informal setting (polite)

 S:
 Could you please repeat that more slowly? / Could you say it again more slowly?
 / Would you mind repeating(/paraphrasing) the question?
*These are very applicable for school setting.

 S:
 I beg your pardon. <most formal>
 I'm sorry, could you please repeat it(/the question)?
*formal or business like setting

If the question is difficult to answer,
 S:Can you give me a moment to think about my answer?
  / Thank you for that wonderful question.
  / That's indeed a challenging one. Can you please spare me a moment to collect my thoughts about your question?
  / That's a question worth to be pondered on. Please give me a moment to think of a worthwhile answer to that.


5.others
T/S:
 Give me a few minutes. Let me check.
 How can(/should) I say... / How can I call this...
 Let me see. / Well, ... / So, ... / Basically, ... / You know, ...

 How fast(/interesting /fun)!
 Sounds interesting! / It's great!
 Oh, that's too bad!
 Okay. / Sure. / Certainly. / Indeed.

S:
 I'm sorry for being late.
 I'm sorry, but my baby is crying.
 - Sorry for waiting(/interrupting). I hold her in my arm. / Sorry to keep you waiting.
  / Could you please excuse me for a minute, I need to check my daughter.
  *"I'm sorry." is actually okay, commonly used. If you make it more polite, you can use "Could you please excuse me ..."

 S:What do you think of(/about) my English skill?
 T: -Your pronunciation is good, so keep up the good work.
  / Your sentence construction and grammar skills are very strong. So we just need to make more exercises to practice it. For pronunciation, that is where we need to work more. But don't worry I will help you.


6.after the lesson
 T:
 We still have two minutes more. What do you want? Do you want to have free talk?
 We don't have enough time.

 Thank you so much for taking my class today.
 / Thank you very much for taking time in coming to my class this morning.
 It was really nice talking with you. / It was very nice to talk to you.
 I hope to see you again next time. / I hope to see you again soon! :)
 / I hope to see more of you on our next lesson.
 Have a good day! / Have a good night! / Enjoy your weekend.
 Good bye and take care.

  / Thank you so much for today. The article seemed very difficult for me but you helped me understand it perfectly.
  / Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge to me. The article is very useful.
  / Thank you so much for an informative(/enlightening) lesson.

7.missed the lesson
 T:I tried calling you but there was no answer. I hope you are okay and I hope to talk to you soon :)

 / Hi, :)Good morning, I hope all is well for you today. I tried calling you but there was no answer. Please send me a message when you are ready to take the lesson, so I can call you. I'll be right here :D
 S:I'm really sorry, but I misunderstood the time when our class would start.
  / I'm really sorry, I had a minor technical problem. But it is fixed now. Its as good as new.
 *必ずしも本当の理由をいわなくていい。
